About the Artist:
Ellen Sherman is an abstract artist working in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her work revolves around the intersection of moments that have been carefully sketched and planned, and moments left to chance; where the paint and canvas forge their own path. The resulting pieces are a bit of a group project between the artist and her materials.
Ellen received her BFA in Studio Art from Michigan State University in 2008 and has exhibited work throughout the US and internationally.
Statement:
My work is about experimentation, discovery, and the exploration of materials. Through a process of creation and destruction, addition and subtraction I seek to find movement and meaning from seemingly disjointed parts. An allegory for moving through this life.
I begin with a painting, either made specifically for this purpose or a previously finished work and cut it apart. These pieces are then combined with others if necessary and reassembled according to the interaction or theme Iām trying to explore. The resulting pieces range from minimal, overlapping forms that hint at fleshy, organic shapes - to chaotic, jazz-like interpretations of color and space.
